SALINAS, Calif – The Salinas Police Department tells KION the suspect is a 37 year old Hispanic man. He is still in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to police Commander Matt Maldonado they are still waiting to hear from the hospital about if the suspect can be released today, as previously expected.

In a Facebook post early Sunday morning, the Salinas Police Department wrote that dispatchers received a call about a man pointing a gun at customers, at the Safeway on Constitution Boulevard. Five officers responded to the scene.

Maldonado says officers opened fire because the suspect was reaching for a gun.
